The alarm went off at 5am this morning and Graeme got up as usual. I lay there pretending to be asleep and hoped he'd forget I'd asked him to get me up.... no such luck, he told me to switch the light on and get up for my run.
As I crawled out of bed (reluctantly) I found I could barely move after yesterday's deadlift session. My back was in agony. I put my running gear on and went downstairs. I decided against trying to eat as felt pretty yucky and got myself out the door.
I stood there waiting for my Garmin to find the satelites and switched on my head torch... God, it's been a long time since I wore a head torch! Almost instantly I felt completely shit and wanted to turn around. I needed the loo (desite going before I left) and my running was not pretty and felt very slow indeed. Every now and again I would glance to the side of me as I thought I heard footsteps... but I think they were just my own. I considered going to the loo behind a bush but then thought better of it as it was too dark and scary, so I just put up with it for the rest of the run. I had to walk a couple of times because I really was desperate at times and I felt really really sick. The last couple of miles I felt much better and more awake, although this could have just been the fact that I knew the run was nearly over and I was nearly home.
It took me about 2 hours to get over it, and I felt zapped and over tired. To be fair though, my Monday runs normally make me like that when my back is aching from deadlifts... the difference today though was that unlike most Mondays' training runs, I now had to go to work for the full day and wasn't able to settle down in front of the TV to watch the latest episode of Emmerdale!!!
So, I've now been at work for a couple of hours and feel much better. I'm glad the run is done and that I only have yoga tonight, but if this is how I'm going to feel after an early morning run then maybe it's just not for me. I'll see how the Lumie Lightbox affects me before making any decisions! If I could just get used to it though, it would free up a lot of evening time for other training stuff/physio appoints etc! Somebody commented on Facebook that it gets easier... I hope they're right!
I collected a box of goodies from the post office today... a parcel from Likeys! I love getting new training gear. I have also ordered a pair of Salomon XC trail shoes from Wiggle. Apparently they are great for neutral runners (so my orthotics will work well in them) and they had a great write up on comfort. I really MUST find something better than my Kandidas before Bangalore, or I'll come back with my feet cut to ribbons!
I have decided that as soon as Amsterdam is done, I am going to do as many (if not all) of my runs as possible on trail surfaces. I've even worked out a loop across the beach banks to do a long run on... although I'm not sure how long my long runs will be after Amsterdam and before Bangalore...
