God... what a crap blog title... but that is what seems to be consuming my life at the moment. Maybe I should add "aches, pains, sleeping like a brick and eating for England" in there too!
Last night, the idea of covering my blister with something as offensive as a shoe made me feel quite squeamish. I decided against running as it seems to be healing so well and I don't want to go and ruin it now. I did 10 minutes on the rebounder and was daring enough to try (for the first time since the day I first got the rebounder) to do it barefoot. I did my usual running motion and apart from sweating profusely (so bad that the sweat was dripping off my fingertips by my side... urrrgghhh) it all went very well. My back ached quite a bit during this after the deadlifts from yesterday, but apart from that all was good. My foot feels so great and I hope that continues. I can even do eccentric exercises on it now, although I haven't dared try to do it on the one leg yet, still doubling up for now!
I did 30 minutes on the step (which again had me pouring with sweat) and then I did a very slap dash set of core exercises... I say 'slap dash' because I was aching so much that every exercise hurt like hell and wasn't done as efficiently as it should have been.
I had an email from William and Shaun, both asking me about the circumstances around the cramp I got on Saturday. One of the queries was the amount I had drank. I don't know if 1 litre of water was enough to drink, but I drank to thirst... I would normally have a lot more than that during a 3 hour run, but I do feel the need to drink less lately. I don't know if that's a fitness thing, or caused by the fact I'm better in the heat, or something else. I'm sure they will get to the bottom of the problem though... they have always found an answer and a solution when I have become unstuck in the past!
I was reading an article today about one persons solution to cramp in the calves during running. They recommended pushing the calf muscle to help it sort of 'cramp more' because naturally that is what it needs to do. Apparently it knacks (what a surprise) but then you do it a second time, then stretch it out and put arnica gel on and you're good to go. I may try that!
As for the blister, I am going to do an easy run tonight and cushion it as much as possible. After the veritable blood bath last week, I think intervals may be too much to try so close to cutting all the dead skin off. After all, I want to be able to do my long run on Saturday... around 20 miles this week!
And, after reading up on trail shoes, I have ordered a pair of Merrell shoes. They had a 'Best in Test' this month and seem to be a good all round shoe that can cope with most surfaces and have very much a "Running Shoe" feel to them. My Kanadias are really comfy, but they cut my feet to bits, even WITH Engo plasters/toe caps/Compeed. I know of another woman who has resorted to another trail shoe for the same reason, so it looks like I'm not alone. So, it seems it's time to look for an alternative!
