Some people are very opinionated... in fairness, most people have opinions about something or other. Sometimes it's best to keep your opinions to yourself, and sometimes it's good to share. Today I think opinions should have been a little tempered!
I was on the treadmill doing my intervals (which incidentally went fairly well), when I looked down into the spa and saw a woman who I have seen numerous times. She literally has the body of a goddess... extremely toned and fairly perfect. I thought to myself that I could easily have a body like that.... IF I ONLY EVER ATE BOILED CHICKEN! However, give her her due, she is obviously very strict with herself... and good on her, if that is what is important to her. She was with her boyfriend who looked like a bronzed version of the hulk... again, not my cup of tea but you have to admire their dedication.
Finishing off my intervals, I wandered into the sauna a sweaty minging unattractive clip! They were both in the sauna talking with Vince. After a few minutes I joined in the conversation as we all discussed our personal divorces! (The things you talk about eh?). The conversation then moved onto the price of food and how you have to pay a fortune to eat healthily and it's fairly cheap to eat crap.
"We only ever eat chicken, chicken and erm... chicken... and we don't eat carbs", the bloke said. I wasn't surprised, and added I couldn't function without carbs. He looked me up and down when I said I did a fair bit of running and said I didn't need carbs at all, and people eat far too much of them. I added that if I didn't eat carbs then I wouldn't run very far. Again, he looked me up and down with a sort of "Really girl, you shouldn't eat that many carbs" look (remember... his girlfriend has the body of a goddess). He sniped that to run at the weekend I didn't need to measure out 100g of rice.. it was too much. I politely said that I have learnt exactly what to eat to run well... and I run more than once a week. I mentioned protein... again, I got an up and down perusal of my figure and he asked why I needed to eat protein. The conversation then lead to strength training and deadlifts... a mistake... he then wanted to know what possible benefits deadlifts had to do with running. I "briefed" him with the details and said it was because I wanted to be an ultra runner, and I needed to fatigue proof my body ready for long distances. He then gave me a lecture on deadlifts (which I politely listened to) and said he couldn't see why I would need to do them.
Vince said "Well, Claire wants to run a 56 mile race in South Africa and is getting trained by an ultra runner"
"Yeah", I added innocently... "I was under the impression that because he holds 34 records, that he maybe knows what he's talking about". I frowned as the room fell silent with peoples mouths wide open, looked around at the sand timer and cheerfully said "Oh, that's me cooked then. See ya" and I walked out!
So, it's good to have an opinion... it's even good to disagree sometimes, and sometimes you just end up coming across as a bigheaded know it all who knows nowt!
