I'm relieving my intense boredom by writing a blog... I believe this is the third one today, but the football is on and I'm bored to tears!
I went to the spa this afternoon and met Graeme. He was on his way back from his college course and was off to do the speed session he missed yesterday, so, as I was almost done by way of training for the day, I just went and had a long 30 minute sauna, a fresh pineapple juice and read a magazine whilst sitting in the lounger by the pool. The spa looks so lovely at night... small lights here and there with the pool lit up in places. Very pretty and rather tranquil. I think it's the most relaxed I've felt in a while, so it did me good.
I came home and did my squats. It's amazing how the "speed" set makes your heart race. I try to do them as explosive as possible, and seem to be getting quite good at them. I'm wondering if that's one of the sessions that will be changed (maybe heavier weight). I don't know though, as when I asked about going up in weight before, Shaun said I had to be careful because I wanted to be a better runner and not a weight lifter. It's a good job I don't do my own training schedule... I'd probably be in a heap and injured by now!
My trainers now have 255 miles in them and don't seem to have gone down at the heel anymore than the last picture I took and posted last week. I look at them every day, expecting them to have the white tell tale mark protruding through the black rubber, but they are still OK. I'm hoping that the next pair I buy will last even longer, as I've learnt to run better whilst wearing these ones.
I'm reading a book about ultrarunning experiences called "Running through the wall". It's OK, fairly average really. After reading Dean Karnazes book, I'm not sure I'll find someone else who writes such a good and detailed race report!
This book is very repetitive... all talking about the same races! I'd never heard of the Western States 100 Ultra, and now I seem to read about it on every other page!
There's one thing I have learnt though... it doesn't matter who you are or how fast you are, everybody hurts during an ultra! You may be feeling pain, but so is everybody else. It intrigues me about people hallucinating too... very weird. I suppose that's the tiredness when doing the longer races.
Oh well... that's not something that will concern me for some considerable time, if ever!
I'm wondering how Graeme will handle an ultra. I'm really not sure. He's pig headed enough to get through it and do a good job too, but his training will let him down. You can (to a certain degree) wing it when it comes to a marathon... but an ultra is something else. He is definitely going to do Basel with me to see what he thinks about it. I'm just not sure how committed he will be to putting the legwork in beforehand. We shall see, I suppose!
