Todays' run finished on my 1000th mile for this year so far. I think it took to the beginning of December to do that much last year!
It was a lovely run...I had lots of cars beeping at me with people waving... no idea who half of them were, although I did spot my parents amongst them...waving frantically instead of looking at the road ahead!
I ran an average pace of 10.03 today and found it comfortable. God... I can't believe I find a 10mm comfortable!!!! Mind you, go lower than that and I'm in trouble and breathing like an asthmatic 90 year old!
I got a nice email from William about Basel and what to expect. He suggested doing "build up events"... not quite sure what that means until I ask for clarification... but I do know it will involve walking breaks. Fabulous!
I've been hell bent on not walking over the last fortnight and have managed to do it well. My reasoning is that as soon as I find it tough going or tiring, I normally walk and I have had the mindset recently that if I can't run through pain or tiredness then I will not manage an ultra. I believe I have already pushed that notion aside and got myself able to push through tiring patches... I've actually realised that the tough patch goes away if you just dig deep and get on with it, and I think I'm quite good when it comes to hills too, can you believe!
So, to train with scheduled walk breaks is a different kettle of fish altogether I think. After all, even elites walk in ultras.
I remember getting advice from a Fetchie about ultras last year... he said, "Bloody hell Cabbey, why do you think we do ultras?... we only do them so we can all walk!"
