We eventually decided on using our e-vouchers for Venice marathon in October, because the terms and conditions of the vouchers meant a holiday with the kids would end up being far more costly. They aren't losing out though... we are taking them for a fortnight to Mexico in the summer holidays!!! Graeme won't be doing the marathon in Venice, but there are a few others who we know that are going too so it should be a good weekend. I just wish ALL of my running friends were going, but I think running over bridges may put some off and having to run another marathon will put others off... shame! :-(
I went to my work conference on Friday and as I was driving down I thought about how good I've been feeling lately. I genuinely can't remember the last time I felt this good in myself. I think giving up the gluten is the thing for me that has made such a big difference. I was also thinking about how I was really looking forward to being able to do my first run outside once I'd got home. Unfortunately, due to standing around at the conference for most of the day and the majority of the night, by the time I eventually went up to bed (at around 2.30am) I found my ankle was absolutley HUGE. I couldn't believe it, as there was no pain. I had drank myself to death that night what with all the free champagne/wine and cocktails (so much so, I opened the cupboard during the night thinking it was the bathroom door and only realised when I couldn't walk into it very far) so I did wonder if the fact I was so drunk eliminated all pain that I may be suffering. I needn't have worried however, as although my ankle was still very puffy the next day, it still didn't hurt. I RICE'd it all day and today the swelling has gone down completely, however I have erred on the side of caution and not done any running. Instead, I did my first set of deadlifts for a while. I was careful and only went up to 50KG for 6 reps on the last set but I enjoyed doing it. So, all being well, I will do my first 1 hour run outside tomorrow after work.
I'm started to formulate a plan ready for the ultra in April. I would like to try a 9:3 run/walk combination and see how that feels. I trained at 8:4 for Cayman and during the race I didn't really care about the time I took (quite often messing around and not trying to go at any given speed at all), however I have two cutoffs to reach in Connemara. One is 13.1 miles in 2 hours 30 and the second is 26.2 miles in 5 hours. I can't see it being a problem... there are a few hills in it and I can only train on undulating roads where I live so I hopefully won't get that awful pain in my hip using different muscles I'm not used to on a flat road. And hey... you can always run the downhills when you're on a walk break if you need to catch up, can't you? I was feeling very optimistic before my ankle became so swollen just from standing around, and although my confidence has been dented at the prospect of being on my feet for hours, I can't let it worry me now... I've just got to do what I've got to do... get on with it!
