Today was my first attempt at the new deadlift session, and I felt a little nervous about how I was going to manage. I made sure I had plenty of glucose (I actually ate a whole packet of shot bloks half an hour beforehand), and took a can of coke up with me to sip in between sets.
I started with a warm up of 10 reps @ 35KG and a second warm up set of 10 reps @ 45KG. Stupidly, the first set should have only been 30KG (50% of your top weight), but I had a bit of a blonde moment and added the weight up wrong.
So, my first set had to be 6 reps of my top weight, which was 60KG. I've only ever managed 2 reps at this weight, so was surprised when I managed the 6. Each set was to be an extra 2.5KG, so I managed 4 reps at the next set. Unfortunately, I'm supposed to do 5 reps on each set, but there wasn't much chance of that today. I was doing 1 or 2 reps on each set until I got to 70KG and failed spectacularly and had to start going down in weight to try and finish the 10 sets. I didn't get there though and finished today with only 8 sets, the last rep giving a "tweak" in my back muscles. It didn't hurt, but I saw it as a warning that I'd pushed it as far as I was going to be able to today!
So, I've done a lot more than I have previously so I can't be too disheartened. Even doing the first set of 6 reps was 4 more than I've achieved before, and if I look back to my first deadlift session where I could only manage 20KG, I realise I've come a long way. I'll get this session sorted before long!
