Secret Ingredient

This morning I woke up at around 7.30am and lounged around cuddling the cat before finally getting up at 8.30. I then had a leisurely breakfast and mulled over the TV options, clearly putting off the impending 1 hour run. It was cold and dark and miserable looking, and after spending a lot of yesterday feeling cold, I didn't want to go out in it again.

I often get asked how I motivate myself... in fact, it was discussed this weekend. My Grandad always says that if I decided I wanted to pilot a jumbo jet, you can be sure I'd do it. He is a tad biased, however to a certain degree he is right... I WOULD get that plane going, but it wouldn't come easy. I'd have to do much more practice and put many more hours in to learn it all than somebody else would need to, and then I would do a very average job of flying it.
It's pretty much the same with anything I do... I'm a trier, and I just keep going until I achieve what I set out to do. It's not pleasant being extremely average at everything, but it's better than not being able to do anything for fear of failure. Failure is all part of it... and you always learn from failures.
So, the sad thing is, there's no secret ingredient... there's no magic formula that can be drawn upon when you just can't be arsed.

That's the situation I faced today. I didn't want to go. So, while I reluctantly put on far too many clothes (fearing the cold), I told the cat I'd be an hour (yes, I am also an insane person who thinks that animals understand English)!

The run was mostly nice. The hat and gloves and jacket all came off before I got to 2 miles, and the misty drizzle was actually nice to run in. I've noticed on my "set timed" runs that I'm getting further along the road each time I run. Today I got past the 3 mile point and halfway down the hill before my Garmin showed 30 minutes. The run home wasn't quite as easy, the hills taking it out of me a bit, and it was at this point I realised I'd forgotten to have a drink of water before I left. I got home and had done well though, especially after yesterdays race.

Just yoga to go today... no doubt the cat will be told how long I'll be, as I drag myself out of the door!
