Well what a totally rubbish nights sleep. I think I got 3 hours. I got back from the spa very late (because I'd had my hair cut first, so we didn't get there until about 7pm. I swam 400 metres nice and slowly, stretched in the sauna (which I found very difficult, as the highest points on my body burnt like hell in the heat towards the end of each 30 seconds)and I also went into the hydrotherapy pool. They have "air beds" which enabled every muscle which was aching from deadlifts to get a zapping. I even managed quite a while in the plunge pool.
At the end of everything, I sat on a lounger by the pool for half an hour, and when I went to get up I had stiffened up everywhere.
Getting home at quarter to ten (I'm normally ready for bed by then) meant I was absolutely starving (despite having tea at 5pm) and ended up having a toastie and a cup of green tea. Big mistake... the caffeine REALLY woke me up, and as I lay in bed still awake at 1am, I swore I'd never drink caffeine that late again. Damn!
I'd emailed William with a few questions about my training, and as I woke up this morning I realised that during the night Shaun had answered me with the most detailed email that must have took him half the night. I'm sure that man doesn't sleep!
I definitely think I may have overdone it on the deadlifts, as I'm aching loads...however there is going to come a day when I really will be "lifting a LOT more" but they asses how everything affects my running over the 2 weeks and adjust things as necessary for now. (As everybody is different)
I asked about my long run too. Apparently this won't go on for longer than 2 hours, even in the future, once it becomes easier (and depending on how things go with me) I will be doing the run faster and adding more weight as appropriate.
The end of the email said "Well, we never did say this was going to be easy :-)"
So, as I will be running a marathon with 3 other people during August, (Paul and Graeme at Isle of Man, Kerry at Fleetwood) it will be interesting to see how quickly I fatigue during it compared with those who are doing the proper marathon mileage.
It's interesting, scary and at this stage a tad daunting... but, I will give it 100% because one day I hope to be doing this for the Comrades. Nothing else I have tried has made me faster, so I'm more than prepared to put my faith in something completely new.
Good luck with it! It sounds tough but equally, you sound focussed and determined - and I'm sure mental strength is going to come into it as well as physical. I'm v jealous re the spa. I'm thinking of stopping our gym membership because we're not using it enough...but it doesn't have the facilities that yours has. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress over the weeks.
ReplyDeleteWell, if you're free one weekend, why don't you come up for the day and you can be my guest there and have a pamper day? Just let me know when you want to come up. Kerry and Terry are going to come up one day too... I'm only allowed one guest a day though... Otherwise we could have had a right girlie day!
ReplyDeleteOoh, might just have to take you up with that! M has a couple of weekends coming up that might leave me home alone...I'll let you know! :-) Thank you!
ReplyDeleteNo problem... The earlier I know the better as I have to book it in. :-)
