Today was my first attempt running with the XL vest. Armed (or should I say vested) with 2% of my bodyweight I put the vest on and thought it didn't seem that bad. It wasn't too much different than wearing a Camelbak. I'd read that you don't notice much of a difference until the 3rd time wearing the vest, so I was quite confident it would be totally fine and feel like nothing out of the ordinary.
I also wore a cap (for only the second time ever whilst running), and I have to say that in 18 degree heat (which is WELL hot for me), I do think it made a difference and made things more bearable.
I ran Filpoke Lane which is one lump after another... I would say it was "hilly" but it's probably more undulating to be fair. The first mile and a half was ok, but it was after the first steep climb that I felt a bit sick and realised I had the vest too tight around my waist and it was pressing against my stomach. I loosened it off, but realised I need to wear a second top in future to avoid chafing. I had read about doing this before going out, but decided to see what it was like without doing anything extra. I can see the wisdom behind it now.
My breathing was literally all over the place and I felt like a beginner runner all over again as I was forced to walk 3 or 4 times during 2 and 3 miles. The good thing is, before today I walked hills and ran flat parts but today I didn't allow myself to walk any of the uphills. Getting towards 3 miles when I got into Hesledon, a last sharp incline made me feel like my legs were at mile 18 of a marathon. I pride myself in having fairly strong legs and am rather shocked at this.
But, I'm a "no pain no gain" sorta girl, so I have come back home and really feel great. I haven't felt this good about a run for months...despite the fact I was totally rubbish at it.
ahem "despite the fact I was totally rubbish at it". Excuse me Mrs?
ReplyDeleteOh I was though... It was dead hard. I was gutted I had to walk.
