Today I went to Whitley Bay to meet up with some of the North East Fetchies for an 8 mile run and cake. (Emphasis on the cake, may I add).
I really wasn't sure about going as my hamstring has been slowly improving and I didn't know if I should give it an extra day. It also doesn't help that they are all a lot faster than me, and although they slow down it is still a speedier pace than I'm used to.
In the end, I decided to go. I met up with Dave, Adam, Flip and Penny and we set off for the 8 mile trail run. The weather was perfect for running, and although the pace was definitely a bit too fast, they put about 3 long walk breaks in that stopped me from passing out with lack of fitness!
My hamstring really was quite achey by the end of it, but a couple of coffees, cake and hot chocolate made me forget about it. Flip was telling me about some of his ultra running and I really am amazed at how far the bloke can run. He has his sights set on a race in Greece that has a qualifying time of 100K in 10 hours. Oh My God!!! That's a tough qualifier.
I mentioned about The Comrades, and he was surprised that the qualifying time for that was only a 5 hour marathon or a 2.20 half. I can do both of those, however I said I thought The Comrades was about 2 years away for me as I wanted to finish within the cutoff time.
So, a good morning was had by all. I then came home and iced my hamstring. It's feeling OK but I'm prepared for a couple of days rest if it needs it. Looking at my schedule, most of my runs don't go over 6 miles during the week. I wonder if I get to find out what this taper madness is all about then! I don't think I have had the pleasure of the condition yet!!!
