I'm all over at the minute. I normally get on holiday and go straight to the time zone I'm in, only having the first day tired. Last night we went to bed early and watched films, and I had a power nap for 15 minutes which kept me awake for hours afterwards. This morning I woke and glanced at my watch, expecting it to be about 5am and shot out of bed when I saw it was almost 10. I pretty much haven't recovered either and have been like a zombie ever since.
We sunbathed until around 2.30pm and took the executive decision to run at 3. I was told by William I didn't need to run in the hottest part of the day but I unfortunately missed that window by sleeping past it. I had considered the fact I was still far too tired to run today and then brushed this aside thinking it was my typical "lack of motivation while tapering" mood that I get in before a race.
So, we went out to do 35 minutes (15 run, 5 walk, 15 run). Within about 40 seconds of leaving the haven of our hotel front gates I couldn't breathe. The fumes from the traffic (which I have to say are nowhere near as bad as yesterday) left me gasping for air. Damn, I'd forgotten my inhaler... Graeme had forgotten his too! The first part is all on an incline with a surface harder than trail... Uneven, sections of path missing, kerbs higher than your knees to jump up and down, dogs and people to run around and cars and tuc tucs to avoid so as not to kill oneself... All while you can't breathe. I was instantly transported back to Marrakech marathon where the fumes of the cars suffocated me until I came to a stand still!
When the first 5 minute walk break came I just thought "Oh thank god". Graeme doesn't get as affected by traffic as I do with his asthma so he was rather chipper. Coming back I added 2 further walk breaks into the 15 minute run. There's no point killing myself is there? When I got back to the room I instantly had a complan (after realising I hadn't had anything to eat since 10am... Doh!) and feel better very quickly which is good.
Tomorrow we are setting our alarm for 7am to run, and I'll make sure I take an inhaler this time. The temperature while running today was 26 degrees and I have another week to fully acclimatise. Graeme is quite surprised that I can sunbathe all day without having to keep going into the pool, and he's also surprised at how much I sweat now. (I never used to sweat much before, just became overheated with a bright red face and could only recover with the aid of thd pool).
So, tonight we are off for a nice meal. My hydration is very good at the moment and you'd think I had cut out the middle man by drinking the water, and just poured it from the bottle down to loo, as the colour is practically non existent! :-)
I'm looking forward to running tomorrow, so I can put today's mistakes behind me.
